Twelve Year Survey of the Susceptibility of Women to Altitude Decompression Sickness
نویسنده
چکیده
00 o CO o INTRODUCTION In 1973 it was reported that the incidence (#cases/#exposures) of decompression sickness (DCS) requiring hyperbaric therapy was significantly greater in women (0.219Z) exposed in altitude chambers at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM) than in men (0.022Z) similarly exposed (Chi , p < 0.005). In the period covered, from 1968 through 1972, the total number of students throughout the USAF treated for DCS numbered 17 (8 women/9 men). In comparing the cases it was concluded that women had a more complex pattern of effects, recurrences and response to therapy (1).

Relationship of menstrual history to altitude chamber decompression sickness.
Records at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, Division of Hyperbaric Medicine, were reviewed to determine the relationship between the incidence of altitude chamber decompression sickness (DCS) in females and menstrual history. The study period spans 11 years, from January 1978 to December 1988. There were 81 records suitable for study. A significant inverse linear correlation was noted bet...
متن کاملAltitude decompression sickness susceptibility: influence of anthropometric and physiologic variables.
INTRODUCTION There is considerable variability in individual susceptibility to altitude decompression sickness (DCS). The Air Force Research Laboratory Altitude DCS Research Database consists of extensive information on 2980 altitude exposures conducted with consistent procedures and endpoint criteria. We used this database to quantify the variation in susceptibility and determine if anthropome...
متن کاملDecompression sickness: an increasing risk for the private pilot.
Decompression sickness is not an appreciated hazard among the private pilot community. This is of growing concern with the increasing number of nonpressurized aircraft capable of flying to altitudes in excess of 5,468 m (18,000 ft). A case report is presented of a 42-year-old pilot who apparently experienced decompression sickness at flight level 250 which went unrecognized until several months...

Scuba diving is associated with an important risk of developing decompression sickness secondary to formation of gas bubbles inside the body. The latter is formed mainly by nitrogen in the body on the diver’s way to the surface (1,2). In some cases, it might injure the central nervous system. Several decompression cases that have been associated with neurologic symptoms are described in the l...
متن کاملChronic Mountain Sickness (Cms) Misdiagnosed As High Altitude Cerebral Edema (Hace) At Extreme Altitude (6400 M/21000 Ft)
Introduction: Chronic mountain sickness (CMS) represents a syndrome of secondary polycythemia along with thrombocytopenia, altered hemorheology, pulmonary and systemic hypertension, and congestive heart failure, occurring due to hypobaric hypoxia-anoxia-induced erythropoiesis reported in both native mountain residents and new climbers after prolonged stays at high and extreme a...
